According to the bottle’s label, Johnny Drum served as a drummer boy in the year 1861 during the Confederate (Civil) War. At the end of the war, legend has it Johnny returned home to his native Kentucky, where he staked claim among a beautiful spring. Johnny learned the importance of finding a way to convert his excess corn crop into a profitable item, rather than allowing it to go to waste. As the story goes, it wasn’t long before Johnny’s determination produced an exceptional bourbon whiskey. Today, Johnny Drum is bottled in three forms (though only two are reflected on Willett’s website as of this writing) - Johnny Drum Private Stock, Johnny Drum Black Label, and Johnny Drum Green Label (not reflected). About the brand

Johnny Drum Private Stock was awarded a "double gold medal" at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the green and black labels each received a silver medal at the 2012 event.[1] However, that was a different Private Stock than is being sold in 2016. The current Private Stock has no age statement (NAS), whereas the one that won the "double gold medal" back in 2010 had a 15-year age statement. Food critic Morgan Murphy said "There's a rye pepper to Johnny, with vanilla-sweet overtones and a hint of cigar." Legend has it that a teen named Johnny Drum left home in Kentucky to fight in the Civil War. However, he was too young to be allowed to take up arms, but a battalion took him on as a drummer boy. After he returned home to Kentucky, he worked corn and, ultimately, started distilling. The spirit in this bottle is the legacy of that original recipe.

Nut fragile and vanilla on the button. Somewhat sharp toward the front with a light mouthfeel. Nearly appears as though cotton candy with a scarcely there feel. It's not cloying like cotton treats however it's sweet. Traces of nuts caramel and some wood zest. The zestiness waits alongside some severe chocolate harsh pecans. This is an incredible pour and a take at $30. 3/29/17 The 15-year (!!!). What. A. Nose. Profound caramel cinnamon graham wafer. Incredible nose. Smooth for the confirmation. A weird home grown component on the sense of taste. Gets done with cowhide. Sense of taste doesn't follow the nose sadly yet this will have fans. 2 out of 5. 5/9/18
